The story

Bob Guccione launched Penthouse in London in March 1965 as a bolder rival to Playboy. An American edition followed in September 1969 and soon became his flagship; other national editions were published under licence. From 1972 the magazine carried Xaviera Hollander’s advice column ‘Call Me Madam’.
